IL-2 Blanche Osborne Chapter

The Chicagoland chapter of the Women Marines Association is named for Blanche Slater Osborne who was a World War I Marine.  She lived in Libertyville, IL with her husband, a general in the first World War.  Before WWII and during, Blanche wrote a column in the Chicago Herald American called “The Soldier’s Friend.”  It served as an information center for veterans and servicemen of the Chicago area.  It provided them with information pertaining to veterans benefits and carried news items such as reunions of old war divisions and buddies, and the best leave and liberty spots in Chicago.  In addition to her writings, Osborne, during WW II, organized blood banks and stage shows to benefit servicemen. Osborne was instrumental in creating the Servicemen’s Center in Chicago, which turned into the USO (United Service Organization).

The Blanche S. Osborne WMA IL-2 Chapter consists of about 37 – 40 members and we meet three times a year for business luncheons.  We meet in February for the anniversary of the authorization of the USMC Women’s Reserve in WW II, a spring meeting in May, and in November, for the birthday of the USMC.  There’s usually a potluck summer picnic in one of the member’s home. There’s sometimes a potluck luncheon in early December for a holiday celebration and to collect toys and/or cash for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots Collection.
